Civic Gardens: Purpose-Built SDA Apartments in Cannington

Civic Apartments at Civic Gardens will deliver 17 purpose-built dwellings exclusively for people with disabilities, amid rising demand across Perth’s south-east corridor. 

The project is a direct response to Perth’s severe shortage of single resident apartments built for people requiring high physical support. 

In Cannington alone, more than 100 people are funded for SDA, yet many are still living in older or unsuitable homes simply because there aren’t enough modern options around.

The 17 apartments include seven two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes for a single resident, eight one-bedroom apartments and two on-site overnight accommodation units for support workers.

Perry Kleppe, Managing Director of GR8 Disability Housing, said the two-bedroom apartments provided flexibility often missing in disability housing.

“They allow participants to choose how they live,” he said. 

“That could mean accommodating support services differently or sharing with someone they trust, without being forced into arrangements that do not suit their lives.”

Unlike developments that allocate a small number of units within a broader residential complex, Civic Apartments is an exclusively SDA project.

“Every apartment has been designed for residents with disability from day one. That consistency makes a difference to how people feel about their home and how well the building works,” Mr Kleppe said. 

Residents will be able to enjoy large private balconies, secure undercroft parking and a rooftop communal space with views across the Canning River Regional Park and the Darling Range — a great spot for fresh air, sunshine and connection.

 And with Westfield Carousel just 500 metres away, plus easy access to buses and train links, daily life becomes more convenient.

Construction is expected to wrap up in March 2026, and we’re looking forward to welcoming residents into homes that truly support independence, dignity and choice.
