A Peaceful Place of Her Own

Sitting on the balcony of her new apartment, Ellen can look out over an area that has been part of her life since childhood.

She remembers visiting Kent Street Weir Park when it was mostly surrounded by bush. These days, she still enjoys spending time there, along with visiting local cafés and shops when she feels like getting out and about.

It is one of the many reasons Civic Gardens Apartments in Cannington already feels like home.

When she was given two housing options, Civic Gardens stood out. It was close to her previous home, in an area she knew well, and offered the chance to live more independently without losing touch with the people and places that matter to her.

A close friend lives on the next street and can easily walk over for a visit. Ellen’s family and other friends are nearby too, making it easier to spend time together.

For Ellen, having those connections close by has made moving into her own apartment feel like a natural next step.

A peaceful place of her own

Ellen says her new home feels much more peaceful.

The apartment has been purpose-built with accessibility in mind, giving her the space to move around comfortably and manage more of everyday life in the way that works for her.

Her favourite feature is the balcony, where she can relax and watch the world go by. It has also become an unexpected place for connection, with people passing below sometimes looking up and stopping for a chat.

Close to the things that make life easier

Living in a central location gives Ellen more freedom to make her own plans.

Cafés, shops, public transport and places to enjoy some time outdoors are all close by.

Westfield Carousel is nearby when she needs it, while Kent Street Weir remains a familiar place she can continue to enjoy.

Could apartment living be an option?

Apartment living may not be the first possibility that comes to mind when a participant, family member or Support Coordinator begins looking for disability accommodation.

However, a purpose-built apartment can offer independence and the convenience of living close to shops, services, transport and community spaces.

Civic Gardens includes 17 brand-new one and two-bedroom apartments, along with dedicated overnight accommodation for support workers.

The different apartment designs can support a range of living and support arrangements, while shared rooftop areas offer views across the Canning River Regional Park and Darling Range.

Every person’s needs and circumstances are different. Some participants may have suitable apartment living options available to them without realising it.

GR8 Disability Housing works closely with participants, families, Support Coordinators and support providers to understand what matters to each person and explore homes that can support their independence, comfort and lifestyle.

If you are looking for suitable disability accommodation for a participant or family member, enquire now by calling (08) 9358 3400 to see what options are possible.
