Civic Gardens Officially Opens in Cannington
Last week, we had the pleasure of officially opening Civic Gardens in Cannington
A significant milestone for disability housing in Western Australia and a project we’re incredibly proud to share with the community.
The launch brought together an amazing group of people who all played a role in bringing this Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) development to life. From project partners, to advocates and care providers, it was a wonderful afternoon filled with conversation and celebration.
We were honoured to welcome WA Housing Minister, the Hon John Carey, who officially opened Civic Gardens and spoke about the importance of expanding housing choice for people living with disability across the State. As part of the celebration, Minister Carey also unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion and recognise the importance of projects like Civic Gardens in shaping the future of inclusive living in Western Australia.
We were also pleased to welcome City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall, who acknowledged the positive impact developments like Civic Gardens have in creating stronger, more connected neighbourhoods while helping address growing demand for SDA accommodation in the area.
GR8 Disability Housing Managing Director Perry Kleppe reflected on the significance of the project and what it represents for people living with high physical support needs across WA.
“Too often, disability housing is approached as an afterthought, rather than being created with independence, safety and dignity in mind,” Perry said.
“Civic Gardens demonstrates what’s possible when homes are tailored specifically for the people who will live in them.”
We’re incredibly grateful to Jack and Daniela Fischer, whose investment and commitment helped bring the project to life. Their decision to support high-quality SDA accommodation is helping create meaningful change for people who have too often been overlooked in the broader housing conversation.
We were also delighted to welcome 32-year-old Lauren Davis, a quadriplegic and GR8 Disability Housing resident, who joined the Minister and Mayor for a tour through the development. Lauren shared insights into the importance of having access to homes that support independence, and the positive impact suitable living environments can have on comfort, confidence and social connection.
Civic Gardens features 17 specialist apartments designed to support independent living, alongside shared rooftop spaces, overnight accommodation for support workers, and convenient access to public transport, shopping and essential services.
To everyone who attended the launch last week – thank you for helping us celebrate this important milestone and for continuing to support greater housing opportunities for people living with disability across Western Australia.
